What is different about buy now pay later for travel compared to a credit card?

With a credit card, you generally have up to 45 days or so to pay off your balance without accruing any interest. But that all depends on when in the billing month you’re making your purchase.

“If your card offers, for example, an interest-free period of 15 days after the end of your billing cycle, you’ll get 45 interest-free days if you make a purchase on the day your billing cycle begins… Your interest calculation isn’t based on when you use your card to make a purchase. It’s based around your statement period and total outstanding credit card balance.

Rate City

But, if you don’t pay your balance in full, you could face interest rates of up to 14-20% on average, with interest calculated daily.

With buy now pay later programs, your interest-free period (if they even have one) is calculated from the time of purchase, rather than it being based on a billing cycle. But, you will likely need to have some of the money upfront.

For example, Afterpay will take the first payment (25% of the total purchase) at the time of the transaction. So you’ll need at least that much available.

How does each program work for travel?

Afterpay

You’ll pay off your trip in four equal instalments, every two weeks. If you miss a payment, you’ll need to pay a late fee. According to Afterpay’s website, if your balance is $40 or less, your fee will be 25% of what you owe. If it’s more than $40, you’ll pay $10 and then an extra $7 for every week it remains unpaid. It adds up until it reaches a maximum of $68 (or it’s paid off)

  • Is there a sign-up or subscription fee? There are no fees associated with using Afterpay, as long we you pay your instalments on time.
  • Do I need to pay anything at the time of purchase? Yes. The first payment (25% of the purchase) is taken at the time of the transaction. So if you’re booking a $1,000 flight, you’ll need to have access to at least $250.

💡Cheaptrips tip: Twice a year Afterpay runs the Afterpay Day sale where you can save a ton on a huge range of websites that accept Afterpay.

Zip Pay

Unlike Afterpay or a credit card, Zip Pay doesn’t require you to pay off your balance within a certain amount of time. Instead, it charges a monthly account fee of $9.95 as long as you still have a remaining balance. The same amount is charged regardless of your balance of $10 or $1,000 (which is the maximum).

You’ll make minimum monthly payments of $40. if you don’t, you’ll be charged a $5 late fee.

  • Is there a sign-up or subscription fee? Yes. You’ll be charged $9.95 per month for the service, as long as you have a balance remaining. If you don’t owe ay money, you won’t be charged the monthly fee.
  • Do I need to pay anything at the time of purchase? No.

Humm

With a much more generous maximum spend than other buy now pay later programs at $30,000, Humm rewards those who can pay off their holiday faster with lower fees.

Purchases less than $2,000 are counted as “Little Things” and can be paid off in either five or 10 fortnightly instalments. If you pay in five, you can skip the $8 monthly fee and just pay the $2 “Little Things fee”. Whichever payment plan you choose though, if you miss a payment you’ll need to pay a $6 late fee.

If you’re a big spender on holidays, you’ll need to go for the “Big Things” plan. (You can only get this after successfully having a Little Things plan, though”. While you will have up to 60 months to pay, you will always have to pay an $8 monthly fee and pay an establishment fee of up to $110. If it’s not your first time using Humm, you’ll also need to pay a $29 repeat purchase fee. Late fees for “Big Things” are also $6 per month.

  • Is there a sign-up or subscription fee? Yes. You’ll need to pay $2 for the “Little Things Fee” (less than $2,000 balance). If you’re paying in 10 instalments instead of five, or have a balance of more than $2,000, you’ll also need to pay an $8 monthly fee.
  • Do I need to pay anything at the time of purchase? Yes. You’ll need to pay a 20% deposit on the date of purchase.

Klarna

With an incredibly similar concept to Afterpay, Klarna lets you buy something today with just a 25% down payment and pay the remainder off in three other payments over a total of six weeks

You’ll be charged a late fee if your balance is higher than $25 and you don’t make a payment on time. The fees range from $2 to $8 in a tiered fee system (which is listed on Klarna’s site).

  • Is there a sign-up or subscription fee? No. As long as you make your payments on time, you won’t need to pay for Klarna’s service.
  • Do I need to pay anything at the time of purchase? Yes. You’ll need to pay your first instalment of 25% at the time of purchase.

Laybuy

Offering the shortest pay-back period of the buy now pay later services, Laybuy requires you to pay one sixth at the time of purchase. You’ll pay the remaining balance over the next five weeks. So, you don’t have quite as much time as some of the others. Or even compared to a credit card.

  • Is there a sign-up or subscription fee? No. But, if you miss a payment you’ll need to pay a $10 late fee.
  • Do I need to pay anything at the time of purchase? Yes, about 16.5% of the total purchase.
