How much are flights to Bali?
Depending on where you’re departing from in Australia, flight prices will change. Fares will be the cheapest coming from Perth and Darwin as they’re the closest cities to Denpasar (Bali’s airport). This will be followed by Sydney and Melbourne as they have the most availability from budget airlines. Brisbane and Adelaide should have similar prices.
Lately, Virgin Australia has had some great fares to Adelaide that compete with pricing we’ve seen from Sydney or Melbourne. When they aren’t on sale though, it tends to be a bit more.
Prices, of course, will also change depending on the season. Low season fares will probably be a few hundred less than high season fares (which includes the Christmas/New Years and Easter period.)
Departure City | Low Season | High Season |
---|---|---|
Perth | $200-$300 | $350-$550 |
Darwin | $200-$300 | $350-$550 |
Sydney | $350-$450 | $500-$700 |
Melbourne | $350-$450 | $500-$700 |
Adelaide | $350-$500 | $500-4700 |
Brisbane | $400-$500 | $600-$800 |
What’s the main airport in Bali, and are there alternates?
Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar is Bali’s only airport, and its code is DPS.
Any alternate airports will be on neighbouring islands. So, unless you’re planning on visiting other places in Indonesia (like Lombok to the east), it may not be worth it. That said, Lombok, is a stepping stone to the Gili Islands. So, if you’re planning on visiting them, then compare the price of flying into Lombok’s airport too.
We’d check the price of the domestic flight or ferry you’d need to take and then see if the savings and extra time are worth the effort.
When is the cheapest time to fly to Bali?
Based on our research of flight prices, we found November to March to be the cheapest time to fly to Bali.
How far in advance should I book tickets to Bali?
If you’re flying during the low season, booking about three months or more in advance will likely get you similarly priced fares.
If you’re booking a flight in the high season, like during a school holiday or Christmastime, the earlier you can book the better. Prices during these times are in high demand and low-priced fares won’t be around long — if they’re around at all.
Of course, if there’s a good sale on, we’d recommend taking advantage of it no matter how far in advance they’ll be. If you’re seeing sale prices similar to the low-season pricing we listed above, book it!
When is the best time to book flights to Bali?
If you can find flights during a sale, this is definitely the best time to find a bargain. Luckily, there’s some regular sales to keep an eye out for if you’re in the market for cheap Bali flights.
While discounted flight routes change each week, but sometimes Bali fares are included in the Jetstar Friday Fare Frenzy and Virgin Happy Hour sales.
A few other key sales to watch out for include:
- Jetstar’s birthday sale (May)
- End of Financial Year (June)
- Black Friday (November)

Our thoughts on the airlines have we flown to Bali?
We’ve flown with Jetstar to Bali and found the flight to be quite comfortable compared to most Jetstar flights. While it depends on where you’re coming from and what’s scheduled for your exact scheduled flight, our Sydney-Denpasar flight was on a wide-body Boeing 787 which tends to be more comfortable (to us) than narrow-body planes.
Is it better to buy return or one-way tickets to Bali?
While it’s probably not the answer you’re looking for… It depends. We recommend checking the price of both two one-way fares and the price of a return ticket. Here’s why.
Airlines sometimes to charge less for the total of a return flight than for two outgoings one, so booking two one-way tickets isn’t always the best option. Jetstar does this a lot.
On the other hand, sometimes one airline’s fare is cheaper than another’s in each direction. So you may find the lowest price from Australia to Bali with, say, Jetstar, but the flight from Bali back to Australia is cheaper if you book with AirAsia.
Here’s what we found when we looked for flights from Adelaide to Bali on random dates, both returning with the same airline and as two one-way fares, travelling on the exact same dates for both combinations:
When we checked prices using two one-way tickets, not only is it $219 more, Virgin Australia wasn’t even coming up as the cheapest option anymore.
To compare, we’ll check flights from another city, this time Melbourne, to see if we get the same results.
In this case, booking two one-way tickets saves you $133 compared to the price of a return ticket with the same airline.
The results are completely different for the two flights we looked up, so it pays to compare both options.
Other than price (if it is cheaper), there’s no benefit, to booking both the outbound and return fares with the same airline. So we say go with whichever combination will get you there and back for the cheapest price.
