Because it’s never too early to start planning.
August may mean that winter is coming to an end here in Australia, but we’re not quite out of the clear yet. And that means one of two things: We’re either looking for somewhere sunny and warm to escape to, or we want to make the most of what winter we have left.
And luckily, there are affordable ways to do both thanks to these destinations, which are some of the cheapest places to travel in August.
Here are 3 cheap places to go in August 2024
Adelaide
Sure, it’s one of the wetter months the city gets but Adelaide is still well worth a visit in August. And not just because of the affordable prices. And they’re cheap. At the time of writing this, this $80-return Melbourne-Adelaide route is the cheapest domestic route you can book in August.
The South Australian capital is surrounded by some of the country’s best wineries and you better believe those cellar doors are open year round! Just picture yourself on a sunny winter’s day, temperatures a comfortable 16C, strolling through the vineyards or sipping a fine Coonawarra Cabernet cosied up by the fire. You’ll be more likely to get into your first picks, too, as there’s generally less people travelling this time of year.
How cheap will it be once you get to Adelaide?
- Hotels: Centrally located, 3-4 star hotels will cost about $125-$150 per night on Booking.com.
- Attractions: A hop-on, hop-off wine tour of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale or the Adelaide Hills will set you back about $100.
- Food: Expect to pay $20+ for a meal at Adelaide Central markets or a simple restaurant.
Bali
You can fly to Bali from either Perth or Darwin for less than $300 return in August, making it the cheapest destination within Asia to fly to in August. Once you get there, you’ll find things on the ground are some of the cheapest on the continent, too.
From $10 massages by the beach to $65-per-day private drivers to whisk you aroung the island, the Australian dollar goes very far compared to the local Indonesian rupiah.
Another perk about going in August 2024 is that it’s not only one of the cheapest times to visit Bali, it’s also one of the driest. So you can enjoy those beaches, private villa pools and strolls through the rice paddies in glorious sunshine. (It’s usually a bit more expensive in August because of this, but booking early can get you to the Island of Gods at a low price during the best time.)
How cheap will it be once you get to Bali?
- Hotels: Basic hotels and guest houses can cost less than $20 per night, but 4-star hotels near the beach can be as cheap as $40 on Booking.com.
- Attractions: Surf lessons start at $20, private drivers for tours start at $65.
- Food: Expect to pay $5-10 for a meal at a restaurant, or $2-$5 for street food.
Greece
Mid-European summer in Greece is on the cheap list? You read that right! Since we’re starting the hunt for the cheapest places to travel in August early, Greece is coming up as the cheapest destination to fly into in Europe from Australia.
What’s great too, is that once you’re there, it’s also a very affordable one to travel around… as long as you don’t have too expensive taste. Stick to some of the lesser-known (but just-as-magical) islands and you can have an affordable European adventure without the crowds.
How cheap will it be once you get to Greece?
- Hotels: Basic hotels or small apartments in Athens can be found for $75-$90 on Booking.com, the islands will likely cost a bit more.
- Attractions: Visiting the Acropolis in Athens will set you back about $25 while a cruise to the volcano and hot springs in Santorini will be about $42.
