India

India has long been known as a budget-friendly destination, once you’re on the ground. It was just getting there that wasn’t always affordable. But, that’s changed.

We’re currently seeing flights starting at less than $500 return. They are to lesser-touristed cities, but could either act as a stepping stone to more popular destinations or a great chance for you to get off the beaten track.

How cheap will it be when I get to India?

  • Hotels: Well-reviewed, 3-star hotels in Delhi can easily be found for $30 or less. If you’d rather relax on the beaches of Goa, expect to pay slightly more.
  • Tours: Join a 15-day journey through some of India’s most iconic places with G Adventures from just $762.
  • Food: A basic meal should cost just a few dollars in a moderate restaurant.

Maldives

Yes, paradise is on our list this month!

Flights are available for as low as $631 return from Australia.

While there’s plenty of luxe accommodation options on these idyllic islands, there are also more affordable, mid-range options too. (Even hostels, if you’re so inclined!). As long as you’re not expecting an over-water bungalow on a private island, there’s affordable hotels on islands like Dhiffushi and Mandhoo going for less than $100 per night.

How cheap will it be when I get to [place]?

  • Hotels: Stay at homestays and simple hotels for $75-$100 per night.
  • Attractions: Luckily, most of the Maldives’ attractions are to relax on the beach and swim in the crystal-clear waters which are free. If you want to join a snorkelling trip, expect to pay about $75.
  • Food: If you’re staying on an island with a town, you’ll likely be able to find meals for around $10-$20. Private island hotels will cost much more.

Switzerland

Another destination we’re really surprised to make one of our cheapest-places-to-travel lists, Switzerland is not known as being an affordable country.

However, thanks to flights going for just $935 return, you’ll have a bit more cash to splash on accommodation, food and activities while in the European alpine nation. And having been there ourselves, we’re firm believers that it will totally be worth it.
