There’s certainly a chill in the air here in Australia, so we’re setting our sights on warmer climes. Luckily, there’s a whole bunch that are budget-friendly this time of year. Here’s a few of our go-tos when we’re low on funds and want to travel; the cheapest places to travel in June.

Malaysia

If you want to warm up, just a few degrees above the equator should do it. And with tropical beaches, lush jungles and some of the world’s most delicious food, Malaysia ticks all of those boxes.

We’re finding some unbelievably cheap fares to Malaysia at the minute, with return tickets going for less than $200 return in June. These fares will get you to Kuala Lumpur. If you’re not keen on a city break, hop on a bus, train or cheap domestic flight and head out to more parts of Malaysia like the island paradise of Langkawi, divers’ heaven in the Perhentian Islands, the lush tea-growing regions of the Cameron Highlands or the foodie capital of Penang.

How cheap will it be once I get to Malaysia?

  • Hotels: You should be able to find budget accommodations for less than $30 per night.
  • Tours/Activities: Diving in the Perhentian Islands will be about $40 per dive, taking in the views from the Langkawi SkyBridge will be about $10, half-day tours from Kuala Lumpur to Batu Caves and nearby villages will be about $13.
  • Food: Street food (where we think the best Malaysian food is found) should be $2-$5 per dish. Expect to pay a bit more in a sit-down restaurant.

Queenstown, New Zealand

Okay. You’re right. We promised you sun and this is quite the opposite. But, we couldn’t look past this deal when we saw it. One of the hottest places in the southern hemisphere to ski, Queenstown usually peaks price-wise come winter. But we’re seeing roundtrip flights going for much less than most domestic flights.

Plus, seeing that skiing in New Zealand won’t set you back as much as it would in Australia (and is much better), we’d jump on this deal if only we had the annual leave available.

How cheap will it be once I get to Queenstown?

  • Hotels: You should be able to find accommodation around the $200-$225 per night mark. While prices certainly aren’t as budget-friendly as Malaysia, they are much lower than staying in ski areas in Australia.
  • Tours/Activities: Skiing at The Remarkables is $165 per day, cruises at the stunning Milford Sound start at $116.
  • Food: Meals at mid-range restaurants will set you back about $20-$30.
