Cheapest places to travel in September 2023

A view of the rooftops of Paris and the Sacre Coeur.

A tropical island escape, a late-European summer rendezvous and a local gem are all on the table.

Pro tip: If you’re travelling in the latter half of the month, avoid any of the usual suspects for a school holiday family getaway. Places like Bali, Fiji and the Gold Coast always increase in price during a school holiday. Or, just pick one of these cheap places to travel in September instead!

Cook Islands

Now connected to Australia by a budget airline, the idyllic Cook Islands just got a lot easier, and a lot more affordable to access. Jetstar has recently launched direct flights from Australia to Rarotonga (via Sydney), and its introductory fares are the cheapest in August and September.

Even better? Cook Islands Tourism recommends September as one of the best times to visit! It has ideal weather, with an average of 25 degrees with not too much rain, and it’s still part of whale watching season.

Tuileries Garden in Paris, France, where you can travel to cheaply in September.

Paris

Seen all the pictures of your friends’ European summers and are now incredibly jealous? Well, it’s not too late to get in on that. (And, likely, at a fraction of the price too!)

This September, we’re finding flights to Paris for as low as $1,133 return with Virgin Atlantic and Delta. They’re the cheapest flights to Europe we’re seeing for the entire month.

It may be just after the European summer, but you’ll still be treated to beautiful weather while you’re there. Temperatures in Paris this time of year are a comfortable-for-sightseeing 21 degrees and September is also one of the driest months of the year. If you’re heading to the south of France, you can expect days that are perfect for the beach at 25.

Tasmania

Almost every Jetstar sale we’ve seen lately has super-cheap, off-season tickets to Launceston and Hobart. (We’re talking as low as $35 each way, and even less if you’re a Club Jetstar member). And Tasmania’s off-season happens to be during its coldest months, especially from May to September.

While you are likely to experience a bit more rain in September, you’ll also have slightly warmer weather than the middle of winter. Plus, coming during this time doesn’t just mean cheaper flights, but cheaper hotels too.

For example, here’s two hotels on our Tasmania bucket list with prices in September versus December (and not even over Christmas!)

Henry Jones Art Hotel
  • September price: $235 per night
  • December price: $378 per night
Pepper’s Cradle Mountain Lodge
  • September price: $469 per night
  • December price: $569 per night
