Saving money before the holiday season doesn’t mean you need to stop travelling.

If you’re not too fussed about where you go, are on a tight budget and looking for some inspiration, it’s your lucky day. These are some of the cheapest places to visit in November if you’re coming from Australia.

Where to go: Cheapest places to visit in November 2023

A temple in Malaysia.

Malaysia

With it’s cheap street food scene, great hotel prices and a lot of low-cost flights to ferry you all around the country, Malaysia is well known as one of the most affordable destinations in Asia. And, getting there from Australia is now cheap, too.

We’re seeing flights in November for less than $300 return to George Town, which is the main city on the beautiful island of Penang. It’s well-known for it’s incredible food scene and historic town centre. Prefer to fly to KL? It’s not that much more to go there.

How cheap will it be once you get to Malaysia?

  • Hotels: You should be able to find a room in a guesthouse for less than $30 per night, or a simple hotel for less than $50 per night in Penang or Kuala Lumpur. (Check prices on Booking.com)
  • Attractions: A street food tour will set you back about $11 and a half-day tour of Kuala Lumpur is just $16.
  • Food: Dine on street food (which is probably where you’ll get the best food in Malaysia) for $2-$4, or just a few dollars more to eat in a restaurant.

Hobbiton movie set in New Zealand.

New Zealand

Just before the summer rush descends on these stunningly isolated islands, you can grab cheap flights to New Zealand if you’re happy to travel in November. And why would you be? You’ll be paying a fraction of what you would over the impending school holidays and have much fewer tourists to contend with at local attractions and on the picturesque hiking trails all across the country.

While, it’s true that on the ground New Zealand isn’t the cheapest place, you may as well take advantage of the discounted flights and cheaper hotel stays outside of peak season.

How cheap will it be once you get to New Zealand?

  • Hotels: You should be able to find simple stays for $100-$150 per night. (Check prices on Booking.com)
  • Attractions: Attractions in New Zealand, unfortunately, don’t always come cheap. Expect to pay about AU$85 for a Hobbiton tour, or AU$140 for a cruise of Milford Sound.
  • Food: Restaurant meals and supermarket prices are generally slightly higher than in Australia. Basic restaurants and pub meals should be around $25-$35.

💡 Cheaptrips tip: Check out the latest Jetstar sales for super-cheap flights to New Zealand. We’ve seen them going for less than $300 return in recent sales.

Amsterdam in winter.

Netherlands

Sure, it may not be the hot European summer you were dreaming of, but it also doesn’t come with those hot burn-a-hole-in-your-wallet European summer prices either. Choosing to visit the Netherlands in November can reward you with flights only slightly above the $1,000-return mark. That’s almost half the price of travelling in July or August. Hotels are sure to be cheaper as well, as there’s less demand from visiting tourists.

If you’re worried about the chilly weather, there’s plenty of indoor activities to do, too, including some fabulous museums. Some of the Christmas markets start opening up in late-November, too, so you can get a taste of a European Christmas a few weeks early.

How cheap will it be once you get to the Netherlands?

  • Hotels: Expect hotels in Amsterdam to be in the $175-$225 range. (Check prices on Booking.com)
  • AttractionsBike rental can be booked from $13 and canal cruises (with options for them to be open-bar) start at $25.
  • Food: Expect restaurant meals to set you back at least $30, but cheaper meals at simple eateries or fast food will be about $10-$15.
