How to get the best Hawaii travel deals
Finding cheap Hawaii flights
To sum it up in two words: Jetstar sales. That’s by far the absolute cheapest way you’ll get to Hawaii. When the budget airline has a sale, these flights are cheap as chips.
Lately, we’ve been seeing them in the low-$400s for a return fare. In a recent Jetstar return for free sale, they were going for $439-$449. But in years past, they even dipped to the $300s.
But, when there isn’t a sale on, here’s how we find the best flights to Hawaii.
Firstly, you’ll need to fly into Honolulu as it’s likely to get you the best price.
And know which airlines to consider. Or at least you do to get the cheapest flight. From Australia, the only place you’ll be able to fly directly to is Honolulu. You’ll be able to fly with Hawaiian Airlines, Qantas and, of course, Jetstar. They’re generally the cheapest, but sometimes flying via Auckland with Air New Zealand or Nadi with Fiji Airways can also find you a bargain.
Looking at a flexible dates calendar is always where we start when looking for a deal. Most airlines will have the option for a whole month’s view or at least +/- three days of your selected dates.
For example, here’s what you’ll see on the Qantas site when you tick the “Flexible with dates” option. You can then see which day in the month has the cheapest price. Unfortunately, not every date will show a price (and this isn’t just isolated to Qantas), but at least you’ll get an idea of when to look, or which days of the week have the cheapest price.
Travel during the off-season to get lower fares. During sales, usually airlines will discount travel during the dates that aren’t selling well. And these are usually in the off season. In Hawaii, this is during the spring and autumn. Fortunately, when it comes to both rain and temperatures, the weather is pretty same-same right through the year.
Sign up to deals newsletters for Hawaii-bound airlines. This can keep you in the loop for whenever they have a sale, so you don’t have to worry about missing one.
Getting a deal on Hawaii hotels
Hotels in the Hawaiian islands are not known for being cheap. But there are ways to at least alleviate some of the pressure they may put on your trip’s budget.
Sign up for cash-back sites like Cashrewards and Shopback. On top of any sales the sites are already having, they can help you get a percentage of the cost of your booking back. For example, we often find sites like Booking.com and Agoda and have bonus cash-back offers.
See if there are any sign-up bonuses you haven’t made the most of yet. Just signing up for a newsletter can get you a promo code for an instant discount off your stay. (And the best part is, if you want, you can unsubscribe once you’ve used it.)
