Our tips for finding the best hotel deals

Use an aggregator

What is an aggregator? It’s a tool that collects pricing information from a range of sites, including online travel agencies (like Trip.com or Agoda) and hotel websites to show a range of prices. You’ll then be presented with a bunch of pricing options for a stay.

Here’s a few examples of hotel deals aggregators:

And here’s how they work. Let’s use Hotelscombined, for example.

We looked up a stay at The Playford Adelaide, and found that if we book with Prestigia, we can save $10 compared to booking on other sites like Booking.com or Wotif.

When it comes to loyalty, either go all-in or all-out

Most people think travel loyalty is something for airlines like Qantas or Virgin Australia, but some hotel chains also offer a sort of “frequent stayer” program.

Let’s look at a few:

  • Hilton Honors: Members get the lowest-price guaranteed, free wi-fi and can earn points to be used toward free stays.
  • Marriott Bonvoy: Gain access to exclusive member rates, get complimentary wi-fi and earn points and status toward free nights and perks like late checkouts.
  • Oaks Discovery: Earn up to 7% back in credit on each booking and get a bonus 10% off stays, including already-discounted ones.

Let’s also not forget our recommendation on going all-out.

Not staying loyal to a brand means you can shop around for the absolute lowest price. At the end of the day, quality-wise, a stay at a Hilton and an InterContinental will be similar, just like an ibis and a Travelodge will be similar. Rates may be completely different though. So if you know what sort of luxury-level you’re after, just look for a stay within that rather than booking with a particular brand. You may just save a lot of money!
