When are these cheap flights available?

You can travel on most routes from November 2024 to April 2025. Like most flight sales though, the peak period from mid-December to mid-January isn’t included.

If you’re looking to travel a bit sooner and are in Brisbane or Cairns, you’re in luck. Flights to Tokyo are available from May to June 2024, too.

What’s included in the price?

Virgin flights include a 7kg carry-on bag, a tea or coffee onboard, in-flight entertainment access and, of course, the guarantee of a seat. Even for long-haul flights (like those to Japan), you’ll need to pay extra for things like food and drink on the plane and a checked bag.

Can I get any frequent flyer points?

Yes! All Virgin flights, sale fare or not, qualify for Velocity points.

Overall, how good is this sale?

Compared to some previous sales, prices are a bit higher in some ares. New Zealand is definitely a stand-out for cheaper-than-usual fares. This sale starts at just $209 while in the past we’ve seen them for $50 or more higher.

This sale from April had fares to Bali starting at $449, while they’re $499 this time around. (But, it also had more expensive fares to New Zealand.)

How to book these flights

There’s no promo code required for this sale. So, you can either book directly with Virgin Australia on its website, or at a preferred travel agent.

Our experiences travelling with Virgin Australia

While we’ve flown with Virgin numerous times, we’ve only flown with Virgin on shorter-haul flights. We did fly with the airline between New Zealand and Melbourne, so do have experience flying that route. The flight was comfortable, and due to our silver status we were able to enjoy access to the domestic lounge while waiting for our connection to Sydney.

One downside though (which isn’t a bother for us as we’re light travellers), is that Virgin doesn’t include checked baggage. As these are mostly longer flights, you’ll probably be travelling for more than a few days. If you’re not a light traveller, you will have to pay extra to bring checked luggage.

That said, would we fly with Virgin again? Of course! We just wouldn’t opt to pay more for those tickets than other airlines.
