Best Jetstar flight sales to watch out for

While every airline offers spontaneous deals every now and then, luckily Jetstar’s are a bit more predictable.

Jetstar’s annual sales calendar

There’s a few times a year where Jetstar just about always hosts a sale:

  • Australia Day sale (not held in 2024, though)
  • Jetstar’s Birthday Sale (early May, the day of the sale does vary a bit)
  • Black Friday (late November, the date varies slightly each year)
  • Christmas sale (launching just before Christmas, usually)
  • Boxing Day (26 December)

Jetstar’s weekly sales

Every Friday, Jetstar hosts a ‘Friday Fare Frenzy’ where flights are discounted from 12pm until 8pm. Sometimes it’s extended through the weekend, which is great when you need a bit of extra time to plan your trip.

These sales aren’t usually as hot as the annual ones, but do often include some good deals, especially on domestic flights.

Regular Jetstar sales to keep an eye out for

Jetstar’s famous “Return for free” sales are always hot ticket items, and they can pop up at any time. Basically, you buy the outward leg of your journey, and the inbound costs you $0.

One of its most popular are the Japan return for free sales, where we often see fares to Tokyo and Osaka going for less than $400 return from Australia. The budget airline often has these going on flights to Hawaii and domestic flights, too ā€” and they’re always a deal.

  • The coastline in Hawaii.

Club Jetstar sales, which are exclusive to members, pop up every now and then too. Prices can be well worth the $55 annual fee. We’ve seen flights across the country starting as low as $29 each way.

No sale on? Here’s how to find the best Jetstar deals

Become a Club Jetstar member

Not only are there dedicated Club Jetstar sales, there’s also ongoing discounts just for being a member that can definitely make the $55 annual fee worth it.

For example, you can see this flight from Darwin to Sydney is $201, but just $190 if you’re a Club Jetstar member. As a member, you can also book flights for other people ā€” just as long as you’re travelling with them. If you’re a family of four, that’s $44 in savings for just your one-way flight.

Example of the savings a Club Jetstar member gets on a flight from Darwin to Sydney.

Fly at a less-favourable time of day

Early morning and late-evening flights are often the cheapest ones available.

You can see in this example of flights between Melbourne and Hobart, that a 6:10am departure is the cheapest one available that day. While it may not always be a huge difference, but it’s still a savings.

Example of how much money you can save by flying early or late in the day.

Not a morning person? Usually when booking far in advance (a few months) there’s less variance in price between morning, afternoon and evening flights.

Travel in the middle of the week

While not just a Jetstar trick, booking a flight on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday will likely get you the lowest fare as they’re the cheapest days of the week to fly.

You can see in this data from flight aggregator Kayak that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly between Sydney and Melbourne.

A chart showing the cheapest days of the week to fly between Sydney and Melbourne, based on data from Kayak.

Similarly, these flights between Adelaide and Perth also show that mid-week is going to get you the lowest-priced fares, on average. While it’s not always a huge difference, it’s still a savings.

Frequently asked questions about Jetstar

What’s considered a good Jetstar deal?

Sometimes Jetstar really thrills with its deals, especially for its birthday sales (which has price points that often correspond with the age its turning!).

But, they’re not all that hot, unfortunately. Generally, we’re pretty happy with Jetstar fares that fall into these brackets:

– Domestic flights: $35-$45 each way
– International flights: $100-$120 each way

Of course, the longer the flight, the more expensive it will get, but we like comparing apples to apples, and in this case, the lowest-priced flight to the lowest-priced flight.

How often are Jetstar sales?

Every. Single. Week. Isn’t that great? Every Friday, Jetstar hosts the Friday Fare Frenzy sale from 12pm to 8pm. It also holds other regular sales throughout the year, but that’s the most regularly occurring one.

Is Jetstar cheaper than other airlines?

Yes ā€” and it guarantees it, too! The airline offers a price guarantee, so if you see the same route on another airline going for less, it will beat it by 10%. It will do the same if you find a Jetstar flight listed on a third party website, too.

Of course, there are terms and conditions, like when the flights are scheduled and whether it’s part of a frequent flyer offer.

What do you get with a Jetstar sale fare?

Just about every Jetstar flight sale that we’ve seen is for “Starter” fares. That’s Jetstar’s most basic fare. With it, you’ll only get the guarantee of a seat on the plane and up to 7kg carry-on luggage.

Of course, if you do need any extras like checked bags, meals during your flight, or a preferred seat on the plane, you can pay extra for those.

As each of those will cost you extra, it’s worth comparing those to higher fares. For example, the below shows the price of a flight between Sydney and the Gold Coast. The Starter fare is $65…

  • If you want to check a bag that’s $25 for a 15kg bag or $27 for a 20kg bag. (Fare is now $90-$92)
  • If you want to select your seat, that’s $8 for a standard seat (Fare is now $100-$102)
  • If you want a basic meal and drink during the flight, that’s $12 (Fare is now $112-$114)

Right there, you’re already paying more to add on extras than just opt for a “Plus” fare from the beginning. Plus (pun intended!) you’ll also be able to earn Qantas points and change your flight without paying a change fee.
