How to find the best New Zealand travel deals
Cheap flights to New Zealand
To get the best fare on a flight to New Zealand, you’ll want to avoid travelling during peak seasons. That includes the Christmas and New Year’s summer holidays, Easter and the July and September school holidays, too. Flight prices can easily double during this time.
Travelling during the winter months, although it will be cold, are the cheapest times to visit New Zealand. The only exception here would be flights to Queenstown as it’s a popular si destination on the South Island.
Search for flights on a site that offers a flexible dates calendar. Jetstar and Qantas both do this for their own flights, but you can use Webjet or Skyscanner to do this, too, and see flights from multiple airlines.

Cheap accommodation in New Zealand
Staying outside of peak season is a sure-fire way to keep costs down, but it’s not always the best solution if you’re restricted to certain travel periods.
It always pays to shop around, and this hotel booking advice applies to stays everywhere, not just New Zealand. Check hotel prices directly through the hotel, and look at a few different hotel booking sites. Even better, compare prices on a hotel aggregator like HotelsCombined or Kayak.
If hotels are proving to be too expensive, try a looking for a homestay. Locals renting out their homes, spare bedrooms, granny flats or a tiny home on their property usually don’t charge as much per night as hotels are. Plus, you’d get a real taste of local life.
One of the best tricks we found is to avoid staying in main cities or touristy areas. Your accommodation costs, whether it’s a hotel or a homestay, can be cut in half – or more – by doing this.
For example, on a trip to New Zealand where we’re travelling from Queenstown to Wanaka to Lake Tekapo, we accommodation in Wanaka to be incredibly expensive, with prices around $300 per night. By staying the night between Wanaka and Tekapo, we’re spending less than $100 for accommodation.
