How to get the best Tasmania travel deals

Travelling to Tasmania during the cheapest time of the year is one of the best ways to bag a bargain, but of course you can really maximise your savings by knowing how to book, too.

✈️ How to find cheap Tasmania flights

We have a few tricks up our sleeves for getting the best prices on flights to Tasmania. Here’s where we’d start:

Keep an eye out for the regular sales

Both Jetstar and Virgin Australia both have regular, weekly sales that are worth adding to your. calendar..

Jetstar’s Friday Fare Frenzy is known to drop prices on flights to Tasmania as low as $35 each way if you’re coming from Melbourne. Other cities in southeastern Australia don’t start from much more, too.

Virgin Australia’s Happy Hour prices do start a higher, but can often be in the $50-$60 range. From our perspective, unless you’re a loyal Velocity member, it’s not really worth it paying almost double the price of Jetstar’s fares. Especially for short-haul flights from cities like Melbourne or Sydney.

Use a price calendar to find the cheapest dates

If you’re flexible with your travel dates, make the most of a calendar that displays all flight prices to find the lowest fares. Airlines like Qantas and Jetstar, and aggregator sites like Skyscanner, offer the option to search a route and see pricing for the entire month.

Looking at the example below, which is for a flight from Melbourne to Launceston, we’re easily able to see that departing on either the sixth or 20th of the month will be the cheapest.

🏨 Getting a deal on Tasmania hotels

Shop around or use an aggregator

A site like Kayak or Hotelscombined will search dozens of other online travel agencies for you and see which one has a room at the best price. For example, we looked for a hotel in Hobart on a random day to see just how much of a difference there is when it comes to one site to another.

Booking with one hotel site over another can save you as much as $31 per night, in this case.

Join a cash-back program

Cash-back programs like Shopback or Cashrewards refund you a portion of the sale you’ve just made in cold hard cash, which can sort of be seen as a savings. You do usually need to wait to get the money (sometimes as far as 90 days after your stay), but it’s still money back!

Often, hotel sites will give about 4-6% back. But, there’s often special offers where it can be as high as 10-12%.

You do need to be careful though. The way sales are attributed to these sites can be a bit finicky, so you’ll need to make sure you book your stay immediately after clicking through from your chosen cashback site. If you click on another site in between, it may not track through. Unfortunately, also, you usually can’t use any additional promo codes (which we’ll talk about in a sec!)

Keep an eye out for promo codes

Deals sites can offer some pretty huge discounts with promo codes that can get you an instant savings off your stay. Especially around holiday sales, like Black Friday and Boxing Day, we often see codes for 8-12% off stays.

There’s probably hundreds of sites out there spruiking various promo codes and, unfortunately some of them don’t work. But, they’re always worth checking. Some sites do regularly check them (and note when they’re last been checked) on the deal.

Pro tip: If we find a promo code for a hotel site, we’ll check to see whether using the code is a better deal, or if opting for cashback is the better deal. Usually, you aren’t able to do both.
