‘Tis the season for cheap flights.
Just a few days after Qantas launched its Christmas sale, Virgin Australia is following suit with fares starting at less than half of what the flying kangaroo has on offer.

When are these cheap flights available?
Availability varies depending on the route, with some available as early as January and others until as late as September.
The cheapest route, Sydney to Ballina-Byron, is only available for $49 if you fly between 25 May and 6 June or 27 July and 31 August, 2024.
Similarly, the next-cheapest, $59 flights between Melbourne and Launceston are available 30 April to 20 June, and 23 July to 12 September.
Understandably, some of the best bargains are available during some of the least desirable times to go, but that’s what often makes these the cheapest times to travel. Plus, generally in Australia even the low-season in destination still rewards us with plenty to do in cooler weather and much fewer croweds.
What’s included in the price?
Virgin Australia sale fares only include the basics: the guarantee of a seat on the plane, a 7kg carry-on bag, a tea or coffee on board and access to in-flight entertainment on your own device.
If you do want to choose a seat, bring a larger bag or eat a full meal during the flight, you can add these on at the time of booking.
Can I get any frequent flyer points?
You sure can! All Virgin Australia fares let you collect Velocity points, which is the airline’s frequent flyer program.
Overall, how good is this sale?
Considering what we’ve seen from Virgin Australia lately, including its Black Friday sale, we’d say this is pretty good. Generally, $45-$49 is as low as the airline goes these days
The two cheapest flights in this sale, Sydney to/from Ballina-Byron Bay and Melbourne-Launceston, are actually the same price as they were in the Black Friday sale. (We will admit though, the travel window was more favourable in that sale).
How to book these flights
Head on over to Virgin Australia’s site to book before 12 December to get these prices.
