When are these cheap flights available?
These flights are available from July to September. The exact dates vary a bit depending on the route, but they’re generally available during these months.
What’s included in the price?
There’s a mix of Lite and Choice fares in this Virgin Happy Hour sale.
If you book a Lite fare, you’ll get an assigned seat on the plane, a carry-on bag that’s up to 7kg, a tea or coffee during the flight and access to the in-flight entertainment system.
If you opt for a Choice fare, you’ll get the above plus you can choose your seat and bring a checked bag up to 23kg.
This can be a great deal, as if you do want to add those two things it will cost less this way. For example, the $45 Sydney-Ballina fare increases to $65 each way when you opt for the Choice fare. Adding a bag and seat separately will add up to $119 a as a selected seat is $9 and a checked bag is $65 alone.
Can I get any frequent flyer points?
You sure can! All Virgin flights qualify for Velocity points. You will earn a bit more if you choose the Choice fare, but either way you will earn.
Overall, how good is this sale?
We think it’s pretty in-line with most Virgin sales. While they occasionally dip down to $35, they’re usually similarly priced to this one.
Last week, we did see the same lead-in price for flights.
How to book these flights
Go to Virgin Australia’s website before 11pm on 16 May to book.
Our experiences travelling with Virgin Australia
We’ve only flown with Virgin on shorter-haul flights, and since everything in this sale is domestic we feel our experiences would be similar to these routes. Honestly, we’ve found the comfort level is pretty equal to the likes of Jetstar.
And when it comes to what’s included in each fare, we’d say they’re pretty equal to Jetstar on that front too (unless you opt for a Choice instead of a Lite fare). For short trips, we tend not to bring checked luggage with us so the fact it’s not included in a Virgin fare is no big deal.
That said, would we fly with Virgin again? Of course!. We just wouldn’t opt to pay more for those tickets than other airlines.
