Your questions about Thailand travel deals answered
One of the best things about Thailand is that the off-seasons are dependant on where in the country you are, so there’s almost always a cheap place in Thailand to visit, any time of the year.
Here are the cheapest times to visit a few popular Thai destinations:
– Bangkok: March to October, with August to October seeing the most rain, while March to May see the highest temperatures.
– Chiang Mai: March to September, with May to June being the absolute cheapest. The hottest months fall from March to May, and the wettest from May to September.
– Phuket: While temperatures are pretty steady year round, Phuket is much rainier overall than the cities in the north, with the wettest months happening from May to October.
– Koh Samui: The islands on the Gulf of Thailand side see rain the opposite months to Andaman islands like Phuket, with most falling from October to December.
P.S. Just because it’s the wettest season, it doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to have rain all the time! Thailand is tropical, so you’re more likely to get heavy downpours in bursts rather than steady, light rain all day.
Some of the best times to book travel deals, and not just for Thailand, are during huge sale events like Black Friday (fourth Friday in November, next one is 24 November, 2023) and Boxing Day (26 December, every year).
In the past, we’ve seen airlines like Jetstar, Qantas, AirAsia and others offer sales on both these dates.
Another sale to watch out for is Jetstar’s Friday Fare Frenzy, which discounts different routes from 12-8pm every Friday. Routes to Thailand aren’t always included, but it’s worth checking in on in case they are.
Unless you’re booking during a big sale event mentioned above (which often has dates quite far in advance discounted), four to six months seems to be the sweet spot for flights to Thailand.
For example, we checked for one-way flights to Phuket within the next month, and they came in at $243. Meanwhile, flights in four and five months awaywere down at $183. That’s a 28% difference.
*Note, these prices were available at the time of writing, but can easily change depending on the time of year.
Of course, “good” prices really do depend on the time of year you’re flying and whether you’re booking a last-minute fare. But, if you’re flying in the off season as mentioned above, you can expect a good deal on a flight to be in these ranges.
If you’re flying into Bangkok or Phuket:
– Perth: $250-$350
– Adelaide: $300-$400
– Melbourne: $400-$500
– Sydney: $400-$500
– Brisbane: $400-$500
There are quite a few other airports in Thailand, including Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Krabi. Unfortunately, they don’t have direct flights to Australia so will cost more to fly to than Bangkok or Phuket.
For hotels, prices tend to be pretty similar in most tourist destinations across the country. There is a bit of fluctuation, of course. Of the islands, Koh Samui tends to be a bit on the pricier side, and between the two major cities, Bangkok is a bit more expensive than Chiang Mai.
Here’s what you can expect to pay for a Thai hotel in 2023:
– 3-star: $30-$60 per night
– 4-star: $75-$100 per night
– 5-star: $100+ per night (or $125+ per night for brand name hotels)
If you’re looking for a beach break, Phuket can be quite budget-friendly. There’s loads of hotel options to choose form and smaller resorts that aren’t part of a major hotel chain can offer rooms at incredibly affordable prices.
Cheap Thailand beach stays can also be found on some of the smaller, lesser-known islands. These can include Koh Jum and Koh Mook. Backpacker hotspots, like Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, also offer bungalows by the beach for what you’d expect to pay for a bed in a shared dorm in most major cities.
For a city break, Chiang Mai will likely get you the most bang for your buck. Not only are hotels usually cheaper here, it’s much more compact than Bangkok, so you also shouldn’t need to spend as much money on taxis or tuk tuks to get around,
